Hopefully all of you enjoyed my reviews from the middle of October until the beginning of November. I would like to say that I got more things to review from Upcomingdiscs.com but things do tend to get stalled during this time of year so unfortunately I do not. I did receive a note earlier this week that I might have two gift sets coming to me from Shout but that won’t be until sometime in December.
Those sets are the Masaaki Yuasa: Five Films Blu-ray set and Evangelion: 3.0+1.11 Thrice Upon a Time Collector’s Edition. Now, there is absolutely no guarantee I will get those sets, and I will frankly be surprised if they do show up on my doorstep especially with the holiday season. Even if I only get one of these two sets, I will be overjoyed as they are very nice collections. (More after the jump).
Some of you might have read my Lu Over the Wall or The Night is Short, Walk on Girl reviews from a few years ago so I’m pretty familiar with Masaaki Yuasa’s work. I really am eager to see Mind Game, Ride Your Wave or Inu-Oh and the wave of bonus material that is likely to accompany this set. If nothing else, it’s bound to be a little nutso which is just peachy for me.
Evangelion (hopefully this is the 4k set) is not something I’m familiar with. I have heard about the series plenty of times, but sadly no previous experience. I am eager to take a look though and give my honest opinion. This is one of the few times where I’m glad that my reviews aren’t on a bigger site because I probably would get crucified for my lack of knowledge on the subject, lol.
Regardless, it’s a welcome Christmas gift for the price of a couple of reviews. Shout has sent me some really nice sets before (for example the Spirited Away set), and I have always given an honest review.
In the meantime, there are plenty of discs I could review from my own personal collection. I just received the Duel 4k Steelbook from Gruv.com and I’m eager to watch. There are also plenty of Criterions that I would like to dive into like the 4k copy of Dreams or The Others which I picked up at the recent Barnes & Nobles sale. I would like to take an extended look at the Shout set of Jackie Chan Collection Volume 2 that I picked up when it went on sale a couple of months back (part of me feels like I should get the 1st collection and deal with that one first). I was going to get the Criterion Jackie Chan Emergence set that came out this month but I’m still weighing my options on that one due to money and packaging reasons.
Speaking of the Jackie Chan Collection Volume 1, there is a certain Target store by me that has actually had the set for months. Online Return type and it’s been sitting in the clearance bin. It’s going for $38.90 I believe which is far cheaper than it’s online price. But I’ve picked it up no less than half a dozen times and it has a loose disc. Each time, I put it back down. I just can’t commit when I know something is probably wrong with it. If it had been $20 or less, I would have taken the chance, but I guess forty gives me pause. Anyway, thought I would share that anecdote.
Last note, if you ever visit this site and it’s down, more than likely it’s my hosting company. Yesterday, 11/15 it was apparently down for about 4 hours or so. Utterly ridiculous. If anyone notices these outages, please drop me a note, leave a comment or whatever. Even if its for 15 minutes. I’m seriously thinking of changing hosting companies when my contract is up late next year, and again, I’m weighing my options. Anyway, that’s it. Take care and hope you enjoy.
