8/21 Update on Backwards Compatibility Voting

Welcome to the 5th iteration of Backwards Compatibility Voting.  This week we did have a couple of announcements that I would like to share before we get to the numbers.  The first being that there was hope that Microsoft would share a much bigger list of BC titles this week, maybe getting that list of now 24-32 (depending on your source) a lot closer to a hundred.  Haven’t seen it yet, but we still got today or early next week perhaps.  Also, and float this in the wishful thinking file, but it’s possible original Xbox titles get emulated as well in a Twitter conversation captured this week.  While I would love to see Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or Shenmue or Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I just don’t see this happening.  And if it is anything like the process for 360, we will get the original Fable & Halo and they will call it a day.

Ouch, what Gamescom giveth, the next week has taken away.  We had lots of votes in last week’s tally, here I swore there were tumbleweeds by the Voting buttons.  No real changes among the first 3, its still Deadpool, Outrun, and NCAA Football 14.  It’s #4-#15 (with the exception of #14, thank you Mafia II) that are just batshit crazy.  In weeks like this, it’s the low ones that will rise to the top because of sheer numbers.

Fun fact about Clive Barker’s Jericho, it hit 666 votes this week and landed a spot in the top 10.  If that isn’t some creepy shit, I don’t know what is.  Still doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell though.  Dun dun dun…*rimshot*.  Anyway, got the love the Leisure Suit Larry and Rumble Roses of the world making it to the top 10, it would have been perfect if say Onechanbara or Lollipop Chainsaw or even Record of Agarest War Zero made the list as well.  Then it would have been like a grand trio of sexist pigs.

Finally, I did want to give a shot out to the pair of Silent Hill Homecoming and Phantasy Star Universe.  Silent Hill proves there is a market for the franchise and not just as a Pachinko machine.  It’s consistently been floating to the end of this list and was in the top 20 overall in the last monthly tally.  Then there is Phantasy Star Universe which in the same breath is more a sentiment to the franchise than just this particular game.  It makes me want to give the single player experience a shot again but then I remember how mundanely boring that is.  It makes Diablo 3 bounty farming seem way exciting.

The bottom five is barely worth elaborating on and is a quite sad state of affairs.  I mean when games are only getting 2-3 votes in an entire week, it’s hard to keep up.  However, I do want to point out that games like Deus Ex, Star Ocean, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night just barely missed the list.  That’s a real shame, and hopefully those titles can avoid this torment in the future.

Welp, that’s it for this week.  Like most, I am just waiting for the huge news of more titles being added to the BC list.  Trust me, this list needs the boost after the dismal week we had over the last seven days.  Enjoy the stats and enjoy your weekend.  Take care.
